S&S Cycle - S&S Performance Parts 2025 L - Volume 67

Introduction

In the time period surrounding this activity, S&S was still racing—at the drag strip and on the salt in Bonneville. 1995 saw George Smith’s Hubba Hubba Team and Andy Gotsis going 200.31mph on their top fuel bike—the first Harley to break 200mph in the ¼ mile. Dan Kinsey piloted the salt Tramp III, a hybrid big twin, to 226.148mph. 2002 saw George Smith and S&S team up with George Bryce to create G2 Motorsports and head into the NHRA with a 160ci 60-degree v-twin that shakes up the Japanese manufacturers hold on Pro Stock Motorcycle. Additional records are set in 2007 at the Maxton Mile where Jeff Bailey and Michael Scaletta show S&S dominance in a number of classes.

S&S celebrated the 45th Anniversary with the third generation of family at the helm. Brett Smith, Tom Smith and Michael Scaletta brought the 145ci engine to market in a special nationwide tour featuring custom builders Arlen and Cory Ness, Pat Matter, Roger Bourget and Bill Rucker of American Ironhorse to showcase the monster engine. A year later S&S came back with the 124ci Tour featuring Rob Schopf, Kim Suter, Wink Eller, Jim Nasi and Kendall Johnson. Following that was the S&S Shovelhead Tour featuring Mike Rouse, Chica, Indian Larry Legacy, Big Bear Choppers and Jesse Rooke. These tours were building up to something, saying something about S&S’ place in the industry.
