NOTES: S&S rods with their beefier than stock construction are slightly heavier than stock connecting rods. Therefore, rebalancing the flywheels is recommended when S&S rods are used in stock replacement applications. We realize that rebalancing is an inconvenience, but we did not want to sacrifice rod strength. In addition, given the variations in stock and aftermarket components available to engine builders, flywheel rebalancing is a desirable step in any major engine overhaul. We recommend and sell only the pre-1990 big twin shaft. Since the S&S pinion shafts are of the earlier design, they will not accept the late style stock pinion gear, oil pump drive gear, gear spacer and pinion gear nut—to make it easier to install S&S flywheels. 1989-’99 big twin engines: S&S offers a conversion package consisting of earlier style pinion gear, spacer, nut, and oil pump drive gear to fit the S&S pinion shaft. S&S offers pinion and oil pump drive gears to fit the S&S pinion shaft for Harley-Davidson® Sportster® models. Crankpins must be measured prior to final honing of bearing races to ensure proper clearance. (Inquire about S&S flywheel rebuild program if adequate measurement equipment is not available.)
