Starting issues more often revolve around a stock starter ring and pinion gear, and are often mistaken for a weak starter motor, when actually the solution is a high torque starter ring and pinion gear. Today’s modified Big Twin engines with exotic ignition timing and high compression will occasionally cough or backfire during startup. This can lead to broken or chipped teeth on the OEM 102 tooth starter ring gear (94 and later.) Here is the answer that you’ve been looking for!
