GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY

MLS:

Multi-Layered Steel is used in head gasket appli- cations and consists of multiple layers of steel uniquely designed and riveted together for a high performance seal. Rubber Covered Metal is used in a variety of ap- plications. It’s steel core is coated on both sides with a thin rubber layer for exceptional sealing and torque retention. Foam Covered Metal is similar to RCM except that the rubber has been processed to yield a sponge-rubber surface. Typically with an alumi- num core, this material is exceptional for many applications. Dead Soft Copper is used on all gaskets made from copper or requiring copper components because of its malleability and its tolerance of extremely high temperatures. A metallic armor/grommet around the bore of the gasket. Stainless steel on head gaskets and copper on exhaust gaskets. Steel base unit encapsulated in a molded rubber coating. High-temperature core material jacketed on two sides with mechanically and chemically bonded steel facing. For exhaust applications. Soft paper facing material bonded to a solid steel core. This material combines the conformability of fibre materials with the shear strength of a me- tallic core. Viton® Flouroelastomer, for high temperature applications. Silicone elastomer for high-temperature and other general purpose applications. Nitrile rubber, or Buna-N, elastomer for general purpose applications. PTFE (Polytetraflouroethylene) coating. Improves seal and provides a barrier that is resistant to material scuffing. Elastomer bead applied to areas of the gasket to improve sealing. Varies between silicone and nitrile depending on the application. Raised area on metallic gaskets to create and/ or improve the seal. Generic term used for a wide range of advanced fibre-reinforced gasket materials. Our fibre-rein- forced papers are made in the U.S.A. from premi- um materials.
